Rohit Sharma’s Unmatched Six-Hitting Pace
Rohit Sharma has broken Shahid Afridi’s record by hitting the most sixes in ODI cricket, surpassing Afridi’s total of 351.
At 38, Rohit Sharma is still breaking big records. In his ODI comeback on home soil, he went past Shahid Afridi’s tally of 351 sixes to become the player with the most sixes in one-day cricket. Rohit needed only two sixes to draw level and crossed the record quickly, achieving the milestone in his 277th match - and 100 innings faster than Afridi. With this achievement, Rohit now tops a legendary list of power-hitters that includes Chris Gayle, MS Dhoni, Sanath Jayasuriya, AB de Villiers, and many others.
Rohit entered the series after scoring a century in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. He had some early luck when he was dropped on 1, as Tony de Zorzi couldn’t hold on to a pull shot at deep third man. That small chance was all Rohit needed. His confidence grew once Virat Kohli joined him at the crease. With Kohli scoring freely at the other end, Rohit had the space to settle down, and once he found his rhythm, the boundaries started coming. A classy backfoot punch off Marco Jansen and two consecutive fours against Corbin Bosch showed that Rohit was now fully in control.
After that, Rohit slightly eased his pace, but kept the scoreboard moving. He brought up his fifty and soon after smashed a pull shot off Marco Jansen to claim the world record.
A Promising Knock Cut Short by a Low Delivery
It felt like Rohit and Kohli simply picked up their partnership from where they ended in Sydney. Kohli was the first to accelerate, and his second six brought up their 50-run stand in just 41 balls. Meanwhile, Rohit, batting on 36, blasted his 350th six in ODIs and then matched Afridi’s record of 351 with another slog sweep - both hit off off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen.
When it comes to matches played, Rohit is the quickest to cross 230-plus sixes in ODI cricket. His long-time partner, Virat Kohli, is still nearly 100 sixes behind him. Rohit was cruising on 57 and looked on track for another century, but a delivery from Jansen stayed low and struck him on the pads. The umpire raised his finger, and although Rohit had the option to go for DRS, he chose not to after a short discussion with Kohli.
