Ravindra Jadeja Reacts to BCCI’s Test Vice-Captaincy Decision

When the Indian team for the two-match Test series against West Indies was announced, fans noticed a new vice-captain in the squad. With Rishabh Pant unavailable, the BCCI selection committee appointed all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as Shubman Gill’s deputy in the longest format. However, Jadeja revealed that he was unaware of this decision. He said he only found out after seeing “VC” written next to his name in the squad list, which came as a complete surprise to him.

Jadeja expressed his gratitude for the trust shown in him, saying that the captain, coach, and management gave him this responsibility as a sign of respect. He added that whenever the team needs support in planning or any other aspect, he is always ready to contribute.

Making Jadeja the vice-captain highlights his seniority and the crucial role he plays as an all-rounder, particularly in Indian conditions where spin bowling is often the key factor. By choosing him, the selectors have clearly shown their trust in experience. At 36, this marks Jadeja’s first major leadership responsibility with the national team, apart from his short stint as captain of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Jadeja’s rare ability to change games with his batting, bowling, and fielding makes him an irreplaceable asset for the team. His appointment also brings a calm and experienced presence to guide young captain Shubman Gill, who is leading the Test side at home for the first time. This move reflects the balance of youth leadership backed by veteran wisdom.

Confidence Boost from England Performances

With 85 Test matches under his belt, Jadeja is among the most experienced players in the Indian squad. Regardless of the title of vice-captain, his insights and contributions remain valuable in every game situation. Speaking about the surprise announcement, Jadeja said, “They didn’t inform me beforehand. I only noticed ‘VC’ written beside my name when the squad was announced. At the end of the day, whatever experience you have, you share it for the team.”

Jadeja said that performing well in England has boosted his confidence as a player. He hopes to carry that momentum into the upcoming series by contributing with both runs and wickets.
