SA20 Auction: Dewald Brevis grabs the spotlight
Dewald Brevis, just 22 years old, has created history at the SA20 Auction by becoming the most expensive player ever. The Pretoria Capitals signed him for a record-breaking R16.5 million, spending more than half of their R32.5 million budget on him alone. The bidding war started between Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals, quickly crossing the R10 million mark. That’s when the Capitals entered the race and eventually sealed the deal, outlasting the Super Kings in the final showdown.
Aiden Markram, the most successful captain in SA20 history with three titles for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, was another big signing at the auction. The Durban Super Giants showed strong interest in the South African T20I skipper and were challenged by the Pretoria Capitals, who had not yet bought Brevis at that point. The bidding battle climbed to R12.4 million with the Super Giants in front. Sunrisers tried to use their Right to Match, but when the price was pushed up to R14 million, they decided not to continue, leaving Markram with the Super Giants.
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder was the third most expensive pick of the SA20 Auction, joining Joburg Super Kings for R9 million. Other big-money signings included Gerald Coetzee, who went to Durban Super Giants for R7.4 million, Nandre Burger picked up by Joburg Super Kings for R6.3 million, and Matthew Breetzke signed by Sunrisers Eastern Cape for R6.1 million. Rassie van der Dussen (R5.2 million to MI Cape Town), Ottneil Baartman (R5.1 million to Paarl Royals), and Anrich Nortje (R5 million to Sunrisers Eastern Cape) also featured among the costlier buys of the day.
Kyle Verreynne’s auction saw some fascinating drama. He was first picked up by Paarl Royals at his base price of R200,000, but the Pretoria Capitals quickly exercised their Right to Match. In response, the Royals raised the bid straight to R2.3 million — a staggering 1050% jump in one move — which forced the Capitals to back out.
South Africa’s Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma once again went unsold at the SA20 Auction, marking the second straight season without a bid for him. In the first auction, Bavuma had also been overlooked but later joined Sunrisers as an injury replacement and was retained for the next season before being released. Another surprising name to miss out this time was veteran pacer James Anderson, who at 43 went without a buyer.
